The Rice women's tennis team opened its 2013 dual season by fending off a stubborn challenge from Lamar before downing the Cardinals 6-1 at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium in Houston on Friday.

The 29th ranked Owls were pushed at both f#1 and #2 doubles before capturing the match's first point, and in singles, the Cardinals held the lead in five of six singles matches in the second sets before the Owls rallied to eventually take five of six matches.

"It was good to get back on the court," head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "I thought we were a little rusty, but I also thought Lamar played really well. They are a gritty team and they make you earn every point. They did that today, but I thought our team did a good job of stepping up when they needed to."
