It's the first collegiate singles title for the Trojan sophomore.

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — USC sophomore Daniel Cukierman (Tel Aviv, ISRAEL) staged his second consecutive three-set comeback to claim his first collegiate singles title as a Trojan, beating Stanford's Sameer Kumar in today's Southern California Intercollegiate Championships singles final today at Marks Stadium.

Ranked #31 in the nation and seeded atop the singles draw for this 62nd annual event, Cukierman had upended the No. 3 seed yesterday in the semifinals to earn his spot in the title match. That pitted the Trojan sophomore against Stanford's #62-ranked and No. 2 seed Sameer Kumar in today's final. There, Cukierman again surrendered the first set, and again dug right back in to carve a path to victory. Tied up 4-4 in the third, Cukierman managed a late break of Kumar to go up 5-4, then held serve to close out the 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 comeback victory to claim the crown on USC's home courts.

Orange Defeat No. 22 Louisville in Five-Set Thriller

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Following a five-set thriller, the Syracuse University volleyball team defeated No. 22 Louisville Sunday afternoon. Syracuse (13-7, 9-3 ACC) handed the Cardinals their second loss of conference play this season as the Orange took the program's first win inside Cardinal Arena.

Polina Shemanova and Ella Saada (Kfar Masaryk, ISRAEL) combined for 33 of Syracuse's 58 kills. Shemanova recorded 19 followed by Saada's 14. Amber Witherspoon and Santita Ebangwese each recorded eight kills while Dana Valelly surpassed her career-high with 29 assists. Aliah Bowllan matched her career-high with 20 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a closely contested first set, Syracuse quickly took control in the second with an 8-4 lead. Louisville's Melanie McHenry tied the match, 9-9, with three-consecutive kills. Following several long rallies, the Orange had three-straight points for a 14-11 lead. Up 18-15, Syracuse took a 5-1 run for its largest lead of the set, 22-16.

The Cardinals came out firing with a 6-1 lead in the third set. Syracuse took back the ball on a Cardinal serving error before Shemanova laid down a kill, cutting Louisville's lead in half, 6-3. A second Louisville service error helped the Orange cut the deficit to one, 7-8. Syracuse pulled within one point three more times, but was unable to take the lead.

'Cuse opened the fourth set with a 9-4 lead, hitting a perfect 5-for-5. Louisville used two blocks to tighten the score, 11-8. Back-to-back kills from Ella Saada pushed Syracuse ahead 17-11. Out of a timeout, the Cardinals laid down a kill but were unable to create any more momentum as Ebangwese tipped one at the net. Syracuse hung on to a five-point lead despite Louisville's two consecutive kills on set point.

Louisville (17-6, 10-2 ACC) opened the fifth set with a 4-1 lead. Three quick points out of a timeout, including a block from Amber Witherspoon and Christina Oyawale, gave Syracuse a 5-4 lead. The two teams traded four points back-and-forth, before three-consecutive Cardinal points put them ahead 9-7. In a fifth set that featured six ties and four lead changes, Syracuse took advantage of 10 Louisville errors. The Cardinals had six attack errors and four service errors, including one on match point, allowing the Orange to take the match.

                                              Tali Marmen, Rutgers University

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (Oct. 27, 2018) – Rutgers volleyball claimed the opening set and rode three career-high marks to a fast start, but Indiana recovered for a four-set Big Ten victory on Saturday night at the College Ave. Gym.

THE LINE
Indiana (14-9, 5-7) 3, Rutgers (6-19, 0-12) 1 – 21-25, 25-17, 27-25, 25-12

KNIGHT NOTES
  • A trio of Rutgers players recorded career-high numbers in the Big Ten match. Freshman Tali Marmen (Ariel, ISRAEL) tallied 17 kills, freshman setter Inna Balyko scooped up 17 digs and freshman middle Merle Weidt put up eight blocks to match her rookie season best (eight against Ohio State).
  • Balyko's 38 assists secured her seventh double-double of the season, and second in Big Ten play.
  • Sophomore right side Kamila Cieslik produced a season-high nine kills.
STANDOUT STATS
  • Marmen finished a dig shy of a double-double while hitting .244 for her match-high 17 kills.

  • Freshman outside hitter Anastasiya Kudryashova served up a team-high three aces.
  • Junior libero Karysa Swackenberg got 16 digs, her 13th double-digit performance of the season.
THE MOMENTS
  • Set 1 | Rutgers' late 6-0 run came at a perfect time. Balyko alternated assists to freshman middle Merle Weidt and Marmen, whose kills put the Scarlet Knights ahead 23-19. Balyko added a service ace out of an Indiana timeout before Marmen capped the rally with her seventh kill of the opening set.
  • Set 1 | Indiana cut the deficit to two points at 23-21 before an IU service error set up set-point, which was capitalized on by senior outside hitter Sahbria McLetchie's lone kill of the set to clinch the win.
  • Set 2 | Rutgers could not overcome Indiana's quick start at 5-0, which eventually spread to 12-3.
  • Set 3 | A pair of Marmen kills tied the set late at 23-23. Cieslik came up clutch twice, saving two set points with a block assist and a kill for the 25-25 tie before the Hoosies put together two kills for the extra-points win and a 2-1 lead.
