NORFOLK, Va. 2/27/21

The Old Dominion women's tennis team (3-4) claimed the doubles point and then won five of six singles matches (four coming in straight sets) en route to a 6-1 victory over William & Mary (0-2) on Saturday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.

"Doubles was impressive, it is so hard to win that many games the way we did," said ODU head
coach   Dominic Manilla. "I was impressed with our focus and attention to details that we played with and we were able to carry that momentum over to singles. It felt great to get back and play at home and it always feels good to beat William & Mary."

Winning in straight sets in singles for Old Dominion were Yulia Starodubtseva (6-3, 6-4), Tatsiana Sasnouskaya (6-2, 6-2), Alesya Yakubovich (6-4, 6-3) and Shahar Biran (Hod Hasharon, ISRAEL) (6-3, 6-0). Brooke Pilkington handled business in the third set tiebreaker over Raffaela Alhach (6-2, 4-6, 11-9).

Frankel Earns February Scholar-Athlete of the Month

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Freshman Tomer Frankel was named the IU Scholar-Athlete of the Month for February.

"Tomer is a true freshman who is originally from Israel. In addition to the unique circumstances surrounding his first term, Tomer also experienced challenges as he navigated his first semester of college having to rely on English, which is not his primary language," said Allen Kohn, IU's assistant director of academic services. "I was, and still am, inspired by the amount of effort and time that Tomer put into each of his courses.

"Throughout the semester he sought out assistance from professors, teammates and learning services to help him build confidence in his reading and writing skills."

On top of his successes in the classroom, Frankel has also won the 200 Freestyle in both meets to open his career. He also was a key member of the winning 400 Freestyle Relay squad against Michigan and Northwestern.

LA Tech (4-3) got off to a strong start, claiming the doubles point and even having a 2-1 advantage through the first two finished singles matches.  However, ULM (3-1) came roaring back with three straight victories to get to four points.
