New Israeli Track Star in Iowa

                 Adva Cohen, Iowa Central CC

NEW ORLEANS - September 19, 2017

 – Like a train with no brakes going downhill, the cross country season is picking up speed.

The same can be said about our National Athletes of the Week in NCAA Cross Country and NJCAA Cross Country. Course records fell and others put the rest of their divisions on notice with strong performances.

National Athlete of the Week is an award selected and presented by the USTFCCCA Communications Staff at the beginning of each week to 10 collegiate cross country athletes (male and female for each of the three NCAA divisions and two NJCAA divisions).

NJCAA DIVISION I WOMEN – Adva Cohen, Iowa Central CC

Freshman | Jerusalem, Israel

Adva Cohen has continued to dominate on the cross country circuit. The product out of Jerusalem, Israel, was the top NJCAA finisher at the Michigan State Spartan Invitational 6K with an 11th-place finish.

Cohen's time of 22:02.8 came against a slew of NCAA Division I and NCAA Division II talent in a race that featured more than 300 athletes.  Adva Cohen won her second NJCAA National Athlete of the week award, and she has only been at school for one month!

                       Ido Goldschmidt, Cal Davis

Sept. 24, 2017

LOS ANGELES - Junior utility Ido Goldschmidt (Hertzeliya, ISRAEL) scored four goals while sophomore attacker Yurii Hanley added two assists and three steals, but UC Davis' late comeback could not overtake an early deficit as the ninth-ranked Aggies lost, 12-9, to seventh-ranked UC Santa Barbara in the Mountain Pacific Invitational 10th-place game at Burns Recreation Center Sunday. UC Davis moves to 9-5 for the year.

Goldschmidt, who tied his season high set two days earlier against Pepperdine, netted one goal in the first, another in the third, then two in the Aggies' fourth-quarter comeback effort. Hanley, senior Cory Laidig, junior Marcus Anderson, junior Nick Coufal and redshirt freshman Kyle Reilly also scored for UC Davis.

Five different Gauchos scored two goals each while sophomore goalkeeper Justyn Barrios posted nine saves.

UC Santa Barbara never trailed in the contest, but UC Davis largely stayed within reach during the first half. Goldschmidt equalized at 1-1 in the opening minutes, while scores by Hanley and Laidig kept the Aggies within a one-goal deficit. UCSB held a 4-3 edge after the first quarter. Anderson scored early in the second frame to hold the margin to a single goal, but Gaucho senior Reed Cotterill immediately answered on the opposite end and sophomore Brannan Haket later converted a power play to extend the UCSB advantage to 7-4 at halftime.

                                                       Galia Nankin, Rutgers University

Galia Nankin (Raanana, ISRAEL) begins her sophomore year at Rutgers University.  See her featured in this video clip from International Students Day earlier this month.
